Personal AI Agent from Meta
Most AI assistants wait for a question. Meta’s new Muse is designed to go further. Give it something that needs doing, and it will take on the work.
That could mean sending an email or booking travel. But Meta is also positioning Muse for longer-term goals, where it can build a personalized plan, coordinate someone’s time and resources, and continue advancing the work after they close the app.
The key to that idea is that Muse doesn’t just live inside a chat window.
An AI agent with its own computer
Muse runs on what Meta calls Muse Secure VM, a dedicated virtual computer in the cloud that contains the agent along with the person’s connected data and credentials.
From there, Muse can open its own browser, fill out forms and negotiate on someone’s behalf. For longer tasks, it can keep working in the background and return when something changes or when it needs approval.
Meta gives examples ranging from selling a car and lowering a bill to adjusting a training plan as someone’s schedule changes.
Muse also remembers details people have shared, allowing it to make suggestions without being asked each time. A saved Instagram recipe, for example, could become a grocery list. It could also suggest a dinner-party menu while remembering dietary restrictions mentioned previously.
The agent isn’t supposed to have free rein
This is where Meta’s design gets more interesting.
A separate Sentinel agent runs alongside Muse but is kept apart from it at the system level. According to Meta, nothing Muse does reaches the internet unless Sentinel approves it, with the person asked for permission when necessary.
Muse also checks before sensitive actions such as sending an email or making a purchase, and provides an audit trail showing what it has done and plans to do.
People decide which apps Muse can access and what it can do inside them. Credentials are kept in secure storage so Muse can use passwords and payment methods without seeing them directly.
Meta says conversations and data inside the VM aren’t shared with its ad systems, and people can opt out of having their interactions used to train Meta’s AI models.
Later this year, Meta plans to go further with Muse Confidential VM, where the entire virtual machine will be encrypted with a key held only by the person using it, meaning Meta says even it won’t be able to access the contents.
Muse is rolling out in the US on iOS, Android and muse.ai, with AI glasses support coming soon.
