Ramp's AI Index Finds That Only the Most AI-Heavy Companies Are Anywhere Close to Spending More on Tokens Than on People
Intelligence: New data from the Ramp AI Index shows that while AI spending is rising fast, even the most AI-heavy companies are not yet spending more on tokens than on their people, though a few are getting close.
The top 1% of companies, which Ramp calls "AI-pilled," spend about $7,500 per employee per month on AI, still well short of the roughly $16,000 a month the average software engineer costs.
For everyone else the numbers are far more modest. The top 10% spend around $611 per employee monthly, and the median company spends just $11.38, about the price of one enterprise seat.
Despite cost pressures, spending among the most AI-heavy firms still grew 14.1% per employee last month, though it is not yet clear if that pace holds.
The heaviest AI users tend to mix and match, moving across multiple frontier models and platforms that also give them access to cheaper open-source options to keep costs manageable.

Google Released DiffusionGemma That Generates Text Up to 4x Faster Than Normal
Intelligence: Google released DiffusionGemma, an experimental open model under Apache 2.0 that generates text up to 4x faster than standard models by drafting entire blocks of text simultaneously instead of one token at a time.
Instead of writing left to right like a typewriter, DiffusionGemma drafts a full 256-token block at once and then iteratively refines it, letting every token attend to every other token in the same pass.
It hits over 1,000 tokens per second on a single NVIDIA H100 and over 700 on an RTX 5090, and fits within 18GB of VRAM when quantized, making it viable on high-end consumer hardware.
The speed advantage is strongest for local and low-concurrency use cases like inline editing, code infilling, and rapid iteration, not for high-volume cloud serving where standard models are more efficient.
Google is upfront that output quality is lower than standard Gemma 4, so it is designed for researchers and developers exploring speed-critical workflows rather than as a production replacement.
