The New Yorker's Deep Dive Into Sam Altman's Deception and the OpenAI Board Coup
Intelligence: The New Yorker investigation revealed that OpenAI's board ousted Sam Altman in late 2023 due to a documented pattern of dishonesty regarding safety protocols and AGI readiness, with concerns stretching back to his leadership of Loopt and Y Combinator ultimately forcing his reinstatement after employee pressure.

OpenAI's then-chief scientist Ilya Sutskever compiled a roughly 70-page document detailing Altman's "consistent pattern" of lying to executives, board members, and government officials, including misrepresentations about China's AGI development and safety protocol compliance.
Loopt employees sought his removal as CEO due to lack of transparency, Y Combinator leadership questioned his trustworthiness and asked him to choose between the accelerator and OpenAI, and late Reddit co-founder Aaron Swartz allegedly called him "a sociopath" who couldn't be trusted.
At OpenAI, Altman allegedly misrepresented the Microsoft deal's provisions to Anthropic co-founder Dario Amodei regarding altruistic clauses, misled the board about GPT-4 safety panel approvals, and downplayed safety requirements to CTO Mira Murati.
Microsoft senior executives described Altman as someone who "misrepresented, distorted, renegotiated, and reneged on agreements," with one calling him potentially a "Bernie Madoff- or Sam Bankman-Fried-level scammer," raising alarms given OpenAI's leading role in existential AI risk.
Following Altman's reinstatement, OpenAI's safety culture shifted dramatically. The company disbanded key safety teams including the existential AI risk team and superalignment team co-led by Sutskever, moving from cautious AGI approaches to "feel the AGI" corporate messaging.

Google Maps Adds Gemini-Powered Captions to Simplify Community Photo Sharing
Intelligence: Google rolled out Gemini-powered caption generation for Google Maps community photos, alongside media access recommendations and enhanced contribution tracking, supporting its 500 million Local Guides who share photos, reviews, and videos to keep Maps information fresh and updated.

Gemini now analyzes user-selected photos and videos to create captions automatically, with users able to edit or remove suggestions. Caption suggestions are available now in English on iOS in the U.S., expanding globally and to Android in coming months.
Media access recommendations now surface recent photos and videos directly in the "Contribute" tab when enabled in phone settings, making it easier for users to find and share the right image without manually searching through device storage.
Google introduced enhanced contribution visibility including total points earned displayed in the "Contribute" tab, Local Guide level highlights on profile pages, updated achievement badges for "expert fact-finder" and "master photographer," and new gold-colored profiles for high-level contributors.
The features are designed to incentivize and recognize the 500 million Local Guides who maintain Maps' accuracy through photo contributions, reviews, answers, and fact-checking.
