DeepSeek Launches New Open-Source R1 AI Models Competing with OpenAI
Intelligence: Chinese AI lab DeepSeek has launched its R1 model family under an open MIT license, making strides toward performance levels comparable to OpenAI’s offerings amidst discussion of potential regulatory impacts.

DeepSeek released the R1 family, including the large DeepSeek-R1-Zero and DeepSeek-R1 models, with the largest version containing 671 billion parameters.
The new models reportedly perform comparably to OpenAI's o1 in various math and coding benchmarks.
Six smaller "DeepSeek-R1-Distill" versions were also introduced, ranging from 1.5 billion to 70 billion parameters, with the smallest designed to run on laptops.
These models utilize a unique inference-time reasoning approach, simulating a human-like thought process to enhance problem-solving capabilities.
Independent researcher Simon Willison praised the model, highlighting its internal reasoning outputs and how they enhance response quality.
DeepSeek claims its models outperformed OpenAI's o1 on several tasks, though these results have yet to be independently verified.

Microsoft and OpenAI Reshape Their Partnership Amidst New AI Infrastructure Developments
Intelligence: Microsoft and OpenAI have restructured their agreement as OpenAI secures a major infrastructure deal with SoftBank and others, enabling OpenAI to explore cloud options beyond Microsoft’s Azure.

OpenAI has signed a significant infrastructure deal called Stargate with investors including SoftBank and Oracle, shifting away from Microsoft’s exclusive data center infrastructure.
Microsoft retains a "right of first refusal" for hosting OpenAI's workloads in the cloud, meaning it has the priority to provide computing resources before OpenAI can look to competitors.
The partnership involves a new large commitment from OpenAI to Azure, ensuring support for all OpenAI products and research initiatives.
Compute availability issues previously caused delays in OpenAI’s product launches and led to tensions between the two entities, prompting OpenAI to seek additional capacity from Oracle.
Key elements of the original partnership, including revenue-sharing, access to OpenAI’s intellectual property, and exclusivity on APIs, will remain in effect until 2030.
There is a significant caveat: should OpenAI reach its definition of artificial general intelligence (AGI) and generate $100 billion in profits, Microsoft would lose its access to OpenAI technology, but OpenAI is contemplating nullifying this AGI agreement to secure more funding from Microsoft.
Microsoft emphasizes that the OpenAI API is exclusive to its Azure platform, allowing customers direct access to advanced AI models.
