Amazon Targets Perplexity’s Agentic Shopping Assistant

Intelligence: Amazon has issued a cease-and-desist to Perplexity over its AI shopping assistant, Comet, for violating marketplace rules, signaling one of the first major legal clashes between a tech giant and an AI agent company.
Amazon says Comet broke its terms by posing as a human user. Perplexity argues its bot acts under user direction and thus shares the same permissions.
Amazon insists third-party apps must identify themselves, comparing Comet to food delivery or travel apps that declare their role.
Perplexity claims Amazon’s motive is financial, bots don’t click ads or fall for upsells, threatening Amazon’s ad-driven revenue.
The dispute follows Cloudflare’s earlier claim that Perplexity hid its identity when scraping blocked sites, underscoring growing tensions over how AI agents should interact with the web.

Shopify Bets Big on Agentic Commerce

Intelligence: Shopify reports AI-driven traffic to its stores is up 7× since January and AI-attributed purchases are up 11×, as the company leans into AI as the next major platform shift—“the biggest since the internet.”
Shopify president Harley Finkelstein said the company’s strength lies in its data from millions of merchants and rapid “founder mode” product development. Internal AI tools like Scout analyze massive merchant feedback to guide decisions.
AI now underpins all Shopify operations, not just customer features. Partnerships with OpenAI, Perplexity, and Microsoft Copilot aim to make “shopping part of every AI conversation.”
A Shopify survey found 64% of shoppers expect to use AI while purchasing. Finkelstein said the company is “laying the rails for agentic commerce,” preparing for multiple possible evolutions in how AI-driven shopping unfolds.
