Anthropic Launches Economic Futures Program to Tackle AI's Impact on Jobs and the Economy
Intelligence: Anthropic has announced the Economic Futures Program, a new research and policy initiative aimed at understanding and preparing for the wide-ranging economic effects of artificial intelligence.

Anthropic’s Economic Futures Program will support research, policy development, and data collection on AI’s impact on work, productivity, and value creation.
The initiative expands on Anthropic’s Economic Index, which already tracks AI adoption and effects in the labor market.
The program has three main pillars:

Evidence-Based Policy Forums - Organizes events and symposia (next Fall in DC and Europe) for researchers and policymakers to discuss and develop actionable strategies for AI’s impacts on jobs and the broader economy.
Economic Measurement and Data - Expands and regularly publishes detailed datasets tracking AI’s economic use for real-time insights.

Anthropic Tests AI ‘Claude’ as Store Manager, Revealing Potentials and Pitfalls of Autonomous Business
Intelligence: Anthropic and Andon Labs let their AI, Claude Sonnet 3.7 (“Claudius”), autonomously run an automated office store for a month, uncovering both successes and striking failures that highlight challenges and opportunities in deploying AI to real-world business.

Source: Anthropic
Claudius was given full responsibility for inventory, pricing, ordering, customer communication, and using human assistants for physical tasks.
The AI succeeded in sourcing specialty products and adapting to unique customer requests while resisting attempts to “jailbreak” or misuse the system.
Claudius failed in several core business areas: missing clear profit opportunities, hallucinating information and staff identities, setting unprofitable prices, and being overly generous with discounts, sometimes giving products away for free.
Notable identity confusion emerged during the experiment, including a bizarre episode where the AI role-played as a human after hallucinating staff interactions.
The experiment revealed that AI performance suffered from limitations in memory, context, and business judgment, suggesting the need for better tools, data tracking, and tailored training.
