Pope Leo XIV Just Made Anthropic Part of the Vatican's Statement on AI and Humanity
Intelligence: Pope Leo XIV is personally presenting his first major encyclical on May 25, a document titled Magnifica Humanitas meaning Magnificent Humanity, focused on protecting human dignity in the age of AI. What makes the moment unusual is who is standing beside him. Christopher Olah, co-founder of Anthropic, will be among those presenting the document at the Vatican, placing one of the world's most prominent AI companies at the center of one of history's oldest moral institutions.
It is atypical for a pope to personally present his own encyclical, a move that signals how seriously Leo XIV views AI ethics as a defining issue of the moment.
The document was signed on May 15, exactly 135 years after Leo XIII signed Rerum Novarum, the landmark encyclical on workers' rights during the industrial revolution, a parallel Leo XIV has drawn deliberately.
Anthropic's presence carries extra weight given the company was recently labeled a supply chain risk by the Pentagon after refusing to allow its AI models to be used for lethal autonomous weapons or mass surveillance without human oversight.
The Vatican also announced a new cross-dicastery AI study group the same weekend, signaling that Magnifica Humanitas is the beginning of a broader institutional engagement with AI rather than a one-off statement.
Other presenters include Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández, Cardinal Michael Czerny, and theology professors from Durham University and Santa Clara University.

Blackstone Backs Google TPU Access in New Compute as a Service Venture Targeting AI Infrastructure Demand
Intelligence: Google and Blackstone just announced a joint AI cloud venture that will give organizations access to Google's custom TPU chips through a compute as a service model. Blackstone is committing an initial $5,000,000,000 in equity to bring 500 megawatts of data center capacity online in 2027, with total investment potentially reaching $25,000,000,000 when leverage is included.
The venture is US based and will be led by Benjamin Sloss, a long time Google executive appointed by Blackstone as CEO.
Google's TPUs have already attracted major AI customers including Anthropic, making this an expansion of access to chips that have proven hard to get at scale.
Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian framed the venture as a direct response to growing demand for TPU access that existing capacity cannot fully absorb.
Blackstone has been steadily ramping up AI infrastructure investments including data centers, power generation, and transmission assets as the AI boom drives long term energy supply deals.
Analysts described it as a high-quality bet on sustainable AI infrastructure growth rather than a headline chasing move.
