Sam Altman Faces Backlash After OpenAI Wins Defense Deal Anthropic Walked Away From
Intelligence: OpenAI announced it won a Pentagon contract that rival Anthropic had just abandoned over concerns about mass surveillance and automated weaponry. CEO Sam Altman held a public Q&A on X Saturday night to address the decision, facing questions about OpenAI's willingness to participate in activities Anthropic had ruled out in its Pentagon negotiations.
The Pentagon blacklisted Anthropic hours before OpenAI's announcement after the company insisted on contractual limitations against surveillance and automated killing applications.
U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has threatened to designate Anthropic as a supply-chain risk, which would cut the lab off from hardware and hosting partners and effectively destroy the company.
Altman said he believes in the democratic process and that "elected leaders have the power", later expressing surprise that people debated whether democratically elected governments or private companies should have more power.
Former Trump official Dean Ball wrote that the Anthropic designation would be unprecedented against an American company and send shockwaves through the industry, even if reversed in court.
The conflict puts OpenAI under pressure from employees to maintain red lines while right-wing media watches for any sign of the company being less than a staunch political ally.

Indian Judge Cited Fake AI Cases
Intelligence: India's Supreme Court has threatened legal consequences after a junior civil judge in Andhra Pradesh cited four fake AI-generated judgements in a property dispute ruling. The top court called it a matter of "institutional concern" with direct bearing on the integrity of the adjudicatory process.
The junior judge in Vijaywada dismissed objections in a property case by citing four past legal judgements that were later found to be AI-generated hallucinations.
The judge told the high court this was her first time using an AI tool and she believed the citations to be "genuine", with the mistake occurring "solely due to reliance on an automatic source".
The high court initially accepted the error was made in "good faith" and upheld the decision anyway, but the Supreme Court stayed the order and called it "misconduct" rather than simply an error.
Last year, India's Supreme Court published a white paper on AI in judiciary, stressing the need for human oversight and keeping institutional safeguards "firmly in place".
