Sam Altman and OpenAI Pivot Beyond GPT-5 Amid Mixed Reception

  • GPT 5 drew a lukewarm response compared with GPT 4, prompting OpenAI to restore GPT 4o and the model picker, promise clearer model transition periods, and roll out updates to make responses warmer while avoiding sycophancy.

  • Despite criticism, API traffic doubled within 48 hours of launch. The company says it is effectively out of GPUs, and tools like Cursor made GPT-5 their default.

  • OpenAI is shifting focus from marquee model launches to competing in search, consumer hardware, and enterprise software, positioning itself as a broader tech platform.

  • Fidji Simo will lead applications, with multiple consumer apps planned beyond ChatGPT, including an AI browser in development and a possible interest in buying Chrome if it were for sale, plus exploration of an AI-driven social app.

  • Hardware bets include a forthcoming device designed with Jony Ive and a planned investment in Merge Labs, a brain-computer interface startup that would compete with Elon Musk’s Neuralink, with integration details not yet set.

  • Altman framed the company’s next phase as larger than ChatGPT, with moves across data centers, robotics, and energy, and a likely path to going public to fund the scale required.

Anna Monaco and Paradigm Launch an AI Agent Spreadsheet and Raise 5 Million

Intelligence: Paradigm, founded by Anna Monaco, opened its product to the public and announced a 5 million seed round led by General Catalyst to accelerate an ambitious product roadmap.

  • Paradigm is an AI powered spreadsheet with more than 5,000 agents that can be assigned to columns and cells to crawl the internet and auto fill data.

  • The product supports models from Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google Gemini with easy model switching to balance higher reasoning quality and lower cost, and the team continuously evaluates models with providers.

  • The company moved from a late 2024 closed beta to public launch, iterating on customer feedback, and reported that some investors kept using and paying for the product during fundraising.

  • Early customers include EY, Etched, and Cognition, with users across consulting, sales, and finance, and a subscription business with usage-based tiers.

  • Paradigm has raised 7 million to date, with the new funds aimed at executing an extremely aggressive roadmap.
