OpenAI Releases Powerful Open-Weight Language Models to Promote Accessible AI

Intelligence: OpenAI has unveiled two open-weight language models, gpt-oss-120b and gpt-oss-20b, offering strong real-world performance and advanced reasoning at low cost, with a focus on safety and broad accessibility for developers, enterprises, and governments.

• OpenAI released gpt-oss-120b (117B parameters, 36 layers) and gpt-oss-20b (21B parameters, 24 layers) under the Apache 2.0 license, outperforming similarly sized open models on reasoning, coding, and health benchmarks. gpt-oss-120b rivals OpenAI’s o4-mini, running on a single 80GB GPU, while gpt-oss-20b runs on edge devices with only 16GB memory.

• Both models use advanced mixture-of-experts architectures for efficiency, activating just a fraction of their total experts per token, and support long context lengths (up to 128k tokens). They are trained mostly on English STEM, coding, and general knowledge data and post-trained for strong instruction-following and tool use.

• The models underwent comprehensive safety testing, including adversarial fine-tuning, and were reviewed by independent experts. They offer safety standards comparable to OpenAI’s proprietary models and are subject to ongoing red teaming challenges with a combined prize pool of $500,000.

• Models are freely downloadable (quantized for memory efficiency) and supported across major platforms (Azure, AWS, Hugging Face, vLLM, Ollama, etc.), with optimized performance on NVIDIA, AMD, and other hardware. Early partners like AI Sweden and Snowflake are leveraging the models for real-world, secure deployments.

Intelligence: Google DeepMind has announced Genie 3, an advanced world model that can generate diverse, interactive environments in real time, marking a major leap in AI-driven simulation for research, training, and creative media.

• Genie 3 creates dynamic, navigable worlds from text prompts at 24 frames per second and 720p resolution, enabling several minutes of consistent interaction and expanding the horizons of simulated environments.
