OpenAI Loses Ground in Enterprise AI Race
+ Microsoft uses Claude Code... not Copilot
Hi everyone,
OpenAI’s goals for 2026 is enterprise, a much more profitable customer type than enterprises.
Also, Microsoft encourages its own employees to use Claude Code EVEN WHEN it sells GitHub Copilot (a competitor).

OpenAI Appoints Barret Zoph to Lead Enterprise Sales as Market Share Drops
Intelligence: OpenAI brought back Barret Zoph from Mira Murati's Thinking Machine Labs to lead enterprise sales efforts after its market share plummeted from 50% in 2023 to 27% by end of 2025, according to Menlo Ventures data. The move comes as Anthropic now dominates with 40% enterprise LLM market share (up from 32% in July) while Google Gemini holds steady at 21%.

Zoph, who previously served as VP of post-training inference at OpenAI from September 2022 to October 2024, left his co-founder and CTO role at Murati's startup under unclear circumstances with rumors about whether he and other former OpenAI employees were fired or left voluntarily, possibly planning to return all along.
Despite launching ChatGPT Enterprise in 2023, more than a year before Anthropic and multiple years before Google, OpenAI has watched its dominant position erode, with CEO Sam Altman expressing concern months ago that Gemini's growth was encroaching on OpenAI's territory.
The company claims ChatGPT Enterprise has 5 million+ business users including SoftBank, Target, and Lowe's, but CFO Sarah Friar flagged enterprise growth as a 2026 priority in a recent blog post.
OpenAI announced an expanded multi-year partnership with ServiceNow to give customers access to OpenAI models, signaling efforts to regain ground through strategic integrations as competition intensifies in the enterprise AI space.

Microsoft Pushes Claude Code to Employees Despite Selling GitHub Copilot
Intelligence: Microsoft is encouraging thousands of employees across its CoreAI team and Experiences + Devices division (responsible for Windows, Microsoft 365, Outlook, Teams, Bing, Edge, and Surface) to adopt Claude Code, even though the company sells GitHub Copilot to customers. The move comes as Claude Code increasingly wins developer comparisons for ease of use with both technical and non-technical users.

Microsoft first adopted Anthropic's Claude Sonnet 4 model inside its developer division in June 2024, then favored it for paid GitHub Copilot users months later, now going beyond using Anthropic's models to widely deploying Claude Code itself across biggest engineering teams.
Even employees without coding experience are encouraged to experiment with Claude Code, allowing designers and project managers to prototype ideas, with Microsoft approving its use across all code and repositories for Business and Industry Copilot teams.
Software engineers at Microsoft are now expected to use both Claude Code and GitHub Copilot and provide comparative feedback between the two tools as the company evaluates internal versus customer-facing AI coding solutions.
The CoreAI team led by former Meta engineering chief Jay Parikh has been testing Claude Code in recent months, with the Experiences + Devices division receiving requests to install it last week across teams building Microsoft's flagship products.
