The Linux Foundation and the Launch of the Agentic AI Foundation

Intelligence: The Linux Foundation has created the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF) to unify open-source standards for AI agents, with support and technology contributions from Anthropic, Block, and OpenAI.

• The AAIF will serve as a neutral hub for open-source projects that aim to make AI agents interoperable and prevent fragmentation across closed ecosystems.

• Founding contributions include Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol, which connects models and tools; Block’s Goose framework for creating agents; and OpenAI’s AGENTS.md instruction file, which helps guide AI behavior for developers.

• Major players such as AWS, Bloomberg, Cloudflare, and Google have joined as members, signaling broad industry intent to develop shared standards for AI safety and collaboration.

• Governance is structured under the Linux Foundation’s directed fund model, where membership dues support operations but technical steering committees control project direction to maintain neutrality.

• Leaders like Jim Zemlin emphasize that open standards will prevent a future dominated by proprietary agent stacks, while contributors like Nick Cooper and David Soria Parra stress that collaboration and evolving protocols are key to long-term interoperability.

• If adopted widely, AAIF’s shared frameworks could reduce costly integrations for developers and encourage an open, modular ecosystem similar to the early days of the internet’s software infrastructure.

Intelligence: OpenAI has launched two new training programs, AI Foundations and ChatGPT Foundations for Teachers, to help workers and educators build practical AI skills and earn certifications that strengthen career opportunities.

• OpenAI aims to certify 10 million Americans in AI skills by 2030 through new learning pathways that connect practical training, certification, and job placement.

• The AI Foundations course provides hands-on training directly within ChatGPT, combining instruction, practice, and feedback in a single environment. Participants can earn certifications that confirm job-ready AI skills applicable across industries.

• Launch partners for pilot programs include major employers and public-sector organizations such as Walmart, John Deere, Lowe’s, Accenture, and the State of Delaware, with educational partners like Coursera, ETS, and Credly helping ensure course quality and rigor.

• College pilots at Arizona State University and within the California State University system will give students and faculty early access to certification programs that align with workforce needs.

• ChatGPT Foundations for Teachers, offered on Coursera, helps K-12 educators learn how to use AI in lesson planning, administration, and classroom support, building on OpenAI’s ongoing partnerships with the American Federation of Teachers and other education initiatives.

• Both programs link to the upcoming OpenAI Jobs Platform, connecting newly certified workers with employers through collaborations with Indeed and Upwork, positioning AI literacy as a key driver of economic opportunity.
