Thinking Machines Is Building AI That Talks Like a Human Conversation Instead of a Turn Based Chat

Intelligence: Mira Murati’s new startup, Thinking Machines Lab, just unveiled an early research system called TML-Interaction-Small that rethinks one of the core assumptions behind modern AI conversations.

  • Today’s AI systems operate like a walkie talkie. You speak, the model waits. The model responds, then you wait. Thinking Machines wants to replace that with something closer to a real phone call where both sides can process and respond simultaneously.

  • The company calls these “interaction models,” built around full duplex communication where the AI listens while generating responses in real time instead of waiting for a complete pause before speaking.

  • According to the company, TML-Interaction-Small responds in roughly 0.40 seconds which approaches the latency of natural human conversation and is significantly faster than comparable systems from OpenAI and Google.

  • The broader idea is that interactivity itself should become native to AI systems rather than layered on top through orchestration tricks and voice pipelines.

  • If the experience works in practice it could fundamentally change how people interact with AI assistants, making conversations feel less like exchanging messages and more like collaborating with another person in real time.

  • Still, this remains an early research preview rather than a public product. The company says a limited research preview will arrive in the coming months with a broader rollout planned later this year.

  • The benchmarks are promising, but whether the actual user experience matches the technical claims is still an open question until people can test it in real world workflows.

OpenAI Launches Daybreak to Embed AI Powered Cyber Defense Directly Into Software Development

Intelligence: OpenAI just introduced Daybreak, a new initiative focused on using frontier AI models to fundamentally change how software is secured by moving cyber defense earlier into the development process itself.

  • The core idea behind Daybreak is that the future of cybersecurity should not revolve solely around finding vulnerabilities after software is shipped, but around building systems that are resilient to attacks from the beginning.

  • OpenAI says modern AI models can now reason across massive codebases, identify subtle vulnerabilities, validate fixes, analyze unfamiliar systems, and move from discovery to remediation dramatically faster than traditional workflows.

  • Daybreak combines OpenAI’s latest models with Codex Security, an agentic security platform that can build editable threat models directly from repositories and focus analysis on realistic attack paths and high impact vulnerabilities.

  • The system is designed to bring secure code review, dependency risk analysis, patch validation, remediation guidance, detection engineering, and threat modeling directly into the day to day developer workflow.

  • One major focus is reducing the operational burden on security teams by compressing workflows that traditionally take hours into minutes while maintaining auditability and verification around every fix.

  • The company framed Daybreak around a broader philosophy that increasingly capable AI systems should expand defensive capabilities while simultaneously incorporating safeguards, accountability, monitoring, and controlled deployment.
