MIT and Thorn Develop a Technique to Detect Harmful AI Model Adaptations Without Generating Outputs

Intelligence: MIT researchers, working with child safety nonprofit Thorn, developed an auditing technique that can determine whether an AI model has been adapted for harmful purposes without ever generating an output. The method examines internal model modifications made during fine-tuning rather than testing outputs directly, and it identified harmful adaptations with complete accuracy in testing.

  • Researchers used a method called Gaussian probing, feeding the model random data points and analyzing how it processes that data internally.

  • The approach identified harmful model adaptations with 100% accuracy when tested against known examples.

  • The method is designed to be scalable and inexpensive, allowing hosting platforms to flag unsafe models before they spread.

  • The research was led by MIT graduate student Vinith Suriyakumar along with professors Ashia Wilson and Marzyeh Ghassemi, and was presented at a workshop during the International Conference on Machine Learning.

🤝POWERED BY HARMONIC

Your employees are connecting AI to everything. Now what?

ChatGPT and Claude aren't just answering questions. Employees are connecting them directly to Notion, Linear, Jira, and the rest of your stack — with no security visibility into what data moves or what actions they take.

Harmonic Security gives your team the visibility to control it.

Meta Removes a Muse Image Feature That Let Users Reference Public Instagram Accounts

Intelligence: Meta has removed a Muse Image feature that let users generate AI images by referencing public Instagram accounts, saying the tool "missed the mark". The feature launched earlier in the week without alerting users if their photos were referenced, and drew immediate backlash from users and talent agencies including CAA before Meta pulled it.

  • Meta removed a Muse Image feature that allowed users to generate images by @-mentioning public Instagram accounts.

  • The feature did not notify users if their public photos were referenced in this way.

  • The decision came amid scrutiny from users and talent agencies, including CAA.

  • TechCrunch published a guide showing users how to opt out, which involved going to profile settings, selecting "Sharing and reuse," and turning off the option that allows others to create with and reuse their content.
