OpenAI's Jalapeño Chip Reportedly Outpaces Leading AI Hardware

Intelligence: OpenAI has spent months testing Jalapeño, its first custom inference chip, against leading AI hardware systems on a public benchmark. The results point to a new phase in how the company plans to run its own models.

  • Jalapeño was designed with AI models used throughout its own development, with the team going from initial design to tapeout in 9 months.

  • The chip runs GPT-OSS 120B, DeepSeek R1, and Kimi K2.5 1T, models built both inside and outside OpenAI.

  • On Kimi K2.5, the largest model tested, Jalapeño delivered roughly 1.5 times higher performance per watt and 3.4 times lower end-to-end latency than the comparison system.

  • Engineers used Codex with GPT-Astra to bring three additional open-weight models to high performance within 2 months, work that was not part of Jalapeño's original plan.

  • For select GPT-OSS blocks, AI-generated code ran 1.5 to 1.8 times faster than versions written by human experts.

  • OpenAI plans to begin deploying Jalapeño inside its own infrastructure by the end of the year, with 2 more chip generations already in development.

M6 and M5 Pro Reshape the Mac Mini Lineup

Intelligence: Apple has refreshed the Mac mini with the new M6 chip and the more powerful M5 Pro option, both built around AI-focused hardware changes. The updated lineup targets everything from everyday tasks to demanding professional workflows.

  • The M6 model includes a 12-core CPU and 12-core GPU, each gaining two cores over the previous generation, along with Neural Accelerators built into every GPU core for the first time on Mac mini.

  • Standard unified memory rises to 16GB, configurable up to 32GB, with memory bandwidth reaching up to 170GB per second.

  • The M5 Pro model supports up to an 18-core CPU, 20-core GPU, and 64GB of unified memory with 307GB per second of bandwidth.

  • Both models add Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and 2.5Gb Ethernet, with a 10Gb option available.

  • Thunderbolt 5 on the M5 Pro model allows multiple Mac mini units to be clustered together to run large AI models entirely on device.
