Eric Nguyen and Arc Institute Reveal AI-Designed CRISPR and Synthetic Genomes

Intelligence: AI can interpret DNA as a language, and the Evo model developed by Eric Nguyen and collaborators at Stanford and the Arc Institute produced functional CRISPR and a rough draft genome, signaling a shift from analyzing biology to designing it while raising safety questions.

• The core idea is to generate DNA with AI rather than only read and dissect it, moving biology from analysis to design.

• Evo was trained on 80,000 whole genomes and can generate sequences 500 times longer than prior models, aiming for prompt-based DNA generation.
