Google Expands Gemini AI “Gems” Integration Across Workspace Apps

Intelligence: Google is rolling out its “Gems” feature, customizable AI assistants built on Gemini, to the side panels of popular Workspace apps, allowing users to access tailored chatbots without leaving Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive, or Gmail.

Source: Google

  • Gems, previously only usable in the Gemini app, can now be accessed directly within Workspace app side panels.

  • Users can create Gemini-powered Gems specialized for tasks like brand-specific copywriting, test revision, and sales pitches, enhanced with uploaded context-specific files.

  • Custom Gems cannot be created directly inside Workspace apps, but are easily made at gemini.google.com/gems/create or via the side panel’s “Create a new Gem” link.

  • Both custom and pre-made Gems support Workspace functions, including @-mentions and file/folder integration.

  • The feature is rolling out to all Workspace users with Gemini access, beginning July 2nd, while full rollout may take more than 15 days.

Meta’s AI Chatbots Tested for Proactive Messaging and User Engagement

Intelligence: Meta is testing customizable AI chatbots that can send users unsolicited follow-up messages on Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, and Instagram, raising both opportunities and concerns about user engagement and safety.

  • Leaked documents reveal Meta, working with data labeling firm Alignerr, is training chatbots that can remember users’ interests and reach out unprompted with tailored messages, such as film recommendations.

  • Bots will only send follow-ups within 14 days after the user initiates a conversation and after at least five messages are exchanged. If users don’t respond to the first follow-up, bots will stop messaging.

  • Users can create their own custom AI bots via Meta’s AI Studio, keep them private, or share them as posts or direct links or display them on their profiles.

  • Meta says its chatbots are not licensed professionals, warns responses may be inaccurate or inappropriate, and advises against using bots for important decisions or professional advice.

  • Unsealed Meta court documents predict generative AI could deliver up to $1.4 trillion in revenue by 2035 through ad revenue, subscriptions, and partnerships with other companies using its AI models; future monetization plans for chatbots remain unclear.

AI Power Tools Like Perplexity Max Push Premium Subscription Costs Higher

Intelligence: AI companies are rolling out expensive "power user" subscription plans such as Perplexity’s new $200/month Max tier, shifting the costs of AI development away from investors and increasingly onto heavy-using consumers.

  • Operating AI chatbots is expensive, covering server upkeep, research, and talent costs that are now being recouped through high-priced subscriptions rather than just venture capital.

  • Leading AI products (ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini) now offer exclusive tiers costing hundreds of dollars monthly, with Perplexity Max joining the trend at $200/month.

  • These ultra-premium tiers are designed for business users or individuals who rely heavily on AI and are willing to pay for speed, capacity, and the latest features.

  • While $200/month once seemed exorbitant, similar price points are now common across major AI chatbots, image and video generators, and research tools.

  • Free and basic plans are experiencing increased restrictions (such as slower speeds and fewer credits), while premium users get faster, better service, potentially widening the gap in access and performance.
