Google Expands Vids with AI Avatars and Editing Tools

Intelligence: Google is rolling out new AI features for Vids in Workspace and launching a free consumer editor without AI.

  • A free Vids editor for consumers offers basic edits, templates, fonts, and stock media, but no AI features.

  • AI avatars for Workspace are now generally available after a beta. Users provide a script, choose a voice and persona, and auto generate videos, similar to offerings from Synthesia and D ID.

  • Vids now detects filler words like um and ah and long pauses. You can click to remove them and the video adjusts.

  • Image to video based on Veo 3 lets users create eight-second clips directly in Vids.

  • Upcoming additions include noise cancellation, Meet-like backgrounds and effects, and portrait, landscape, and square formats with timing not yet announced.

  • AI features are available to Workspace Business or Enterprise Starter users, Google AI Pro or Ultra subscribers, and Workspace for Education customers.

Microsoft Integrates GPT-5 into Microsoft 365 Copilot and Showcases New Cross-App Capabilities

Intelligence: Microsoft says GPT-5 now powers 365 Copilot and shared five prompts that demonstrate personalized, cross-app assistance across email, chat, meetings, and calendars.

  • GPT 5 has been in 365 Copilot for a few weeks, adding a new intelligence layer across Microsoft apps.

  • Copilot can predict likely topics for an upcoming meeting based on prior interactions with a person.

  • It can draft project updates by pulling from emails, chats, and meetings, including KPIs vs. targets, wins and losses, risks, competitive moves, and likely tough questions with answers.

  • Cool things it can do:

    • It can assess readiness for a product launch by checking engineering progress, pilot results, and risks and provide a probability.

    • It can analyze the past month of calendar and email to group work into 5 to 7 project buckets with percent time and short descriptions.

    • It can prep for a meeting by reviewing a selected email and past manager and team discussions tied to that meeting series.

Max Keenan’s Aurelian Deploys AI to Offload Nonemergency 911 Calls

Intelligence: Aurelian, founded by Max Keenan, has rolled out an AI voice assistant now live in more than a dozen dispatch centers to triage routine calls and free human dispatchers for true emergencies, backed by a $14 million Series A led by NEA.

  • A hair salon client stuck on hold for 45 minutes exposed that the same 911 teams were fielding routine issues like parking and noise, pushing systems to the breaking point.

  • Aurelian pivoted from salon automation to an AI voice assistant that captures details for routine reports and instantly routes suspected emergencies like chest pain or break-ins to human dispatchers.

  • Since the May 2024 launch, more than a dozen centers have deployed it, including Snohomish County, Washington, Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Kalamazoo, Michigan, and it now handles thousands of live calls each day.

  • The company raised 14 million dollars in Series A funding led by NEA to expand. The pitch is relief for severe staffing shortages and burnout in emergency communications, where turnover is among the highest, and shifts often run 12 to 16 hours.

  • NEA says the system fills phantom positions rather than replacing staff because agencies cannot hire enough dispatchers, giving telecommunicators a chance to take breaks.
