Gemini Doesn’t Want to Go Quiet
The harder part of voice AI might be keeping the conversation alive.
Talking to an AI gets a little weird when you ask it to do something complicated.
The whole point is that it feels like a conversation. But then the actual work starts. Reasoning, calling tools, handling multiple steps. And suddenly that nice fluid conversation has a processing problem.
Google’s new Gemini 3.8 Live models are basically an attempt to make those two things happen at once.
And I think that’s the more interesting part of this announcement. Not just making voice AI smarter, but making the intelligence less disruptive to the conversation.
It can talk while it works
There are two models here.
Gemini 3.8 Live is the version built around scale and cost efficiency. It combines conversational intelligence with visual grounding, processes visual inputs in near real-time, and can automatically switch between 97 supported languages during a conversation.
It can also execute tools and API calls in the background while it keeps talking.
That last bit is easy to skim past, but it changes the interaction quite a lot. The model can acknowledge what you’ve asked, continue the conversation, and let the actual task finish behind the scenes rather than making the whole exchange wait on it.
Then there’s Gemini 3.8 Live Extended Thinking, which takes that idea further for more complicated work.
This version is designed to reason and speak simultaneously. So while it’s working through a multi-step task, it can give an early acknowledgement like “Let me check that…” and then narrate its progress as the work continues.
Basically, the reasoning doesn’t have to become dead air.
There’s some serious task completion behind it too
Google points to several benchmarks for the Extended Thinking model. It scored 82.6 on Artificial Analysis’ Speech to Speech Quality Index, 68.6% on τ-Voice, 35.1% on Sierra’s τ-Voice-banking benchmark, and 97.7% on Big Bench Audio.
Meanwhile, the regular 3.8 Live placed second in the Speech Agent Arena.
The models are also being plugged into a fairly broad developer ecosystem through the Gemini Live API, with platforms including Agora, Fishjam, LangChain, LiveKit, Pipecat, Vercel, and Vision Agents handling some of the real-time media infrastructure.
So this isn’t only about making Gemini nicer to chat with. Google is explicitly positioning these models as building blocks for production voice agents.
And maybe that’s the thought worth keeping.
A voice agent doesn’t just need to understand what you said. If it’s going to handle complicated work without making the interaction feel awkward, it needs to keep being part of the conversation while it figures things out.
