Google DeepMind's Co-Scientist Gives Researchers an AI Partner to Generate and Refine Scientific Hypotheses
Intelligence: Google DeepMind published its Co-Scientist research in Nature, unveiling a multi-agent AI system built on Gemini that generates, debates, and refines scientific hypotheses alongside researchers. The tool is now being made available to individual scientists through a new experimental feature called Hypothesis Generation.
Co-Scientist runs a team of specialized agents that generate, debate, and continuously refine research ideas, getting sharper with every round.
A supervisor agent acts as the brain of the operation, breaking down complex research goals and running multiple agents in parallel to explore many directions at once.
At its core is a "tournament of ideas" inspired by AlphaGo, where agents hold structured scientific debates to surface the strongest hypotheses and verify them against databases like ChEMBL, UniProt, and AlphaFold.
It has already been tested on real challenges like antimicrobial resistance and liver fibrosis, with enterprise partners like Daiichi Sankyo and Bayer Crop Science piloting an advanced version.
Before launch, it went through independent safety reviews covering chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear misuse, with custom classifiers built to catch harmful or unethical research goals.
Researchers can register their interest now at labs.google/science, with a broader Google Cloud enterprise rollout also in the works.

Google Releases Gemini 3.5 Flash as Its Most Capable Model for Agentic Workflows and Coding
Intelligence: Google launched Gemini 3.5 starting with 3.5 Flash, a new model purpose-built for agentic tasks and coding that runs four times faster than competing frontier models at less than half the cost.
Gemini 3.5 Flash outperforms Google's own 3.1 Pro on key agent and coding benchmarks.
It handles long, complex tasks that used to take developers days or auditors weeks, all at less than half the cost of comparable models.
3.5 Flash powers Gemini Spark, Google's new personal AI agent that runs around the clock and takes action on your behalf. The beta hits Google AI Ultra subscribers in the US next week.
It also builds richer, more interactive web UIs and graphics, leveling up the multimodal experience on top of Gemini 3's existing foundation.
The whole 3.5 series was built under Google's Frontier Safety Framework, with sharper CBRN protections and new interpretability tools that let the model check its own reasoning before responding.
