Google Forms AI Strike Team to Close the Gap with Anthropic's Claude Code

Intelligence: Google is so concerned about Anthropic's Claude Code pulling ahead in AI coding that it has quietly formed a dedicated strike team to respond. Sergey Brin himself sent a memo urging engineers to move fast, and both he and Google DeepMind's CTO are directly involved.

  • The goal is to turn Gemini into a primary developer of production ready code, not just a coding assistant.

  • The longer term aim is AI takeoff, meaning AI that can improve itself and eventually automate the work of AI researchers entirely.

  • The strike team is focused first on improving Gemini's ability to work with Google's own internal code.

  • Because the model will be trained on proprietary Google code it likely cannot be released publicly, at least not initially.
