Brian Armstrong’s Coinbase Fires Holdouts Amid AI Coding Push

Intelligence: Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong said the company fired a few engineers who refused to onboard to AI coding assistants after a company-wide mandate, underscoring that AI use is not optional.

• Coinbase bought enterprise licenses for GitHub Copilot and Cursor to cover all engineers and pushed for rapid adoption.

• After some leaders predicted slow uptake, Armstrong posted in the main engineering Slack, requiring everyone to onboard by the weekend.

• At the Saturday meeting, a few employees without good reasons for not onboarding were let go, which Armstrong called a heavy-handed but clear signal.

• Coinbase now runs monthly sessions where teams share effective AI workflows to spread best practices across engineering.

Tim Cook’s Apple Weighs Google’s Gemini for Next-Generation Siri

Intelligence: Apple is running a bake-off between its own models and outside options, including a custom Google Gemini model trained to run on Apple servers, to decide how to power the revamped Siri.

• Apple is testing two Siri tracks internally. Linwood is using Apple’s models, and Glenwood is using outside tech while evaluating Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic, with no decision yet.

• Apple has approached Google has begun training a custom Gemini model designed to run on Apple’s servers to fit Apple’s on-device and private cloud approach.

• Anthropic has been viewed as a favorite but is reportedly asking too high a price, and Apple is only exploring an external partner for Siri for now, not broader Apple Intelligence features.

• Apple is trialing its first trillion-parameter model to surpass current 150 billion-parameter server models even as it compares performance with third-party options.

• Timeline Apple unveiled an all-new Siri in June 2024 for iOS 18, hit major roadblocks and leadership changes, restarted the effort, and now targets a 2026 launch with a spring release window.
