Intelligence: Perplexity has made its AI browser Comet free for everyone and says it will stay free forever, positioning it as a Chrome challenger while adding a paid Comet Plus news bundle.

  • Comet is now free for all users after an initial phase limited to the $200 per month Perplexity Max plan, then select Pro subscribers and invite-only access from a waitlist with millions of people.

  • The browser centers AI by integrating Perplexity search and a personal assistant that travels the web with users to help with shopping, booking trips, and general life admin.

  • Comet Plus offers curated news content with launch partners CNN, Conde Nast, Fortune, Le Figaro, Le Monde, The Los Angeles Times, and The Washington Post; it is included with Pro and Max or costs $5 per month for others.

  • Perplexity says the internet is better on Comet and frames the move as a serious challenge to Google Chrome, committing to remain free forever.

Intelligence: The NBA and AWS announced a multi-year partnership making AWS the Official Cloud and Cloud AI Partner across NBA leagues and launching NBA Inside The Game to deliver advanced stats and fan experiences.

  • AWS becomes the Official Cloud and Cloud AI Partner for the NBA and its affiliates, including the WNBA, NBA G League, Basketball Africa League, and NBA Take Two Media.

  • NBA Inside The Game powered by AWS will turn billions of data points into insights to enhance live broadcasts and fan engagement across the NBA App, NBA.com, and social channels.

  • New AI-powered advanced stats use player tracking with 29 data points per player and will debut in the 2025 to 2026 season, including Defensive Box Score, Shot Difficulty with Expected Field Goal Percent, and Gravity that measures defensive attention using optical tracking at 60 frames per second.

  • Play Finder uses AWS services, including Amazon Bedrock and Amazon SageMaker, to search similar plays, trigger real-time alerts for commentators, and give teams access to the underlying ML models while laying the groundwork for future generative AI features.

  • The NBA App, NBA.com, and NBA League Pass will run on AWS, enabling personalized and in-language experiences for global fan.

  • The partnership extends Amazon's media ties as Prime Video begins an 11-year rights deal, streaming 66 regular-season games globally and serving as the strategic partner and global subscriptions store for League Pass with an opening night doubleheader on Friday, Oct 24, featuring Celtics at Knicks at 7:30 p.m. ET and Lakers hosting Timberwolves at 10 p.m. ET.
