OpenAI Faces GPT Shift as AI Companion Apps Surge

Intelligence: The AI companion app market is accelerating, and after user pushback to GPT 5, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman temporarily brought back the 4o model.

• Market expansion this year includes 337 active revenue-generating companion apps, with 128 launched in 2025, generating $82 million in the first half and pacing for over $120 million by year-end.

• Adoption is broad, with 60 million downloads in the first half of 2025, up 88 percent year over year, and 220 million cumulative downloads across Apple and Google stores.

• Monetization is rising with $221 million in lifetime consumer spending, and revenue per download is up to $1.18 from $0.52 in 2024.

• User interest skews toward romantic companions, as 17 percent of app names include "girlfriend" versus 4 percent for "boyfriend" or "fantasy," and many low-traction apps since 2022 were removed and not counted in the analysis.
