Hi {{first_name|everyone}},

Claude is reportedly refusing some game developers’ requests, even on games they own, and we look at why. Also in this issue, an AI port of a Windows game to Mac that hit 140 fps, three tools worth checking out, Google’s record one-day stock drop, and an interactive pixel garden built with Claude. Let’s see how this one plays out.

🤿 DEEP DIVE

When Claude Refuses to Help

Even developers working on their own games are getting blocked.

Imagine building your own video game, asking your AI coding assistant to fix something, and having it refuse because it thinks you're copying someone else's work.

Apparently, that's happening with Anthropic's Claude.

Developers have been reporting that Claude Code and Opus 5.5 are refusing to help with perfectly ordinary game development tasks. We're talking about fixing existing projects, recreating individual game mechanics, and even working on anti-cheat systems.

And the weird part is that some of these developers are working on games they actually own.

So what's Claude trying to stop?

There's reportedly a new rule floating around that tells Claude not to recreate specific existing games, even if someone renames them or claims they're original.

Building an original game is fine. Making something in the same genre is fine. But recreating an existing title apparently crosses the line.

The exact wording hasn't been officially confirmed by Anthropic, although developers have been filing GitHub issues describing refusals that seem to fit the rule.

And to be fair, there's a genuine problem behind all this.

AI-powered game cloning has become messy enough that some independent developers are reportedly facing extortion threats. The threat is basically that someone will take their unfinished game demo, use AI to clone it, and release a complete competing version before the original developer finishes theirs.

Which is pretty grim when you're a small studio just trying to get a game out.

But here's where it gets complicated

Reverse-engineering isn't always about stealing someone's game.

Developers also use it to understand existing software and convert games between different systems. Tools like Reverse Engineer Anything (REA) have made that work a particularly hot topic recently.

And now some users say Claude is refusing to help with that work too.

There's also a possible connection to Anthropic's cybersecurity restrictions. The company introduced a Cyber Verification Program on October 6, limiting access to certain advanced cybersecurity capabilities.

Some developers say their anti-cheat and security work is getting caught by safeguards as well, although it's unclear whether the two sets of restrictions are actually connected.

That's the distinction worth paying attention to.

There's a difference between asking AI to copy someone else's game and asking it to repair, examine, or improve software you legitimately work on.

But the reported refusals suggest Claude isn't always making that distinction successfully.

Anthropic hasn't officially explained the game-related restrictions, so the precise rules and their intended scope remain unclear.

Meanwhile, some frustrated users are already suggesting local and open-weight AI models as alternatives.

The whole situation is a strange one. AI tools are becoming capable enough to help recreate entire games, but attempts to prevent that misuse are apparently making them less useful to some of the people building games in the first place.

The quick take

  • Claude is reportedly refusing legitimate game development tasks, including fixes to existing projects and work on individual mechanics.

  • An alleged rule prohibits recreating specific existing games, although Anthropic hasn't confirmed its wording.

  • AI game cloning is a real concern, with reports of independent developers facing threats involving copies of unfinished games.

  • Cybersecurity safeguards may also be involved, but there's no confirmed connection between the restrictions.

  • The central problem is distinguishing copying from legitimate development, and some reported refusals suggest Claude is struggling with that boundary.

Google just lost $500 billion in a single day - Alphabet shares plunged 12.6% on Thursday, their worst one-day drop ever, after disappointing earnings and weaker-than-expected advertising sales. And here's the bigger concern. Google has committed to more than $1 trillion in multiyear AI-related spending agreements, while Wall Street is growing increasingly nervous about how long it'll take those massive investments to pay off.
