Anthropic Launches Cowork to Manage Files and Tasks Like a Colleague

Intelligence: Anthropic released Cowork, a research preview for Claude Max subscribers on macOS that gives Claude direct access to folders on your computer to read, edit, and create files autonomously.

• Cowork is built on the same foundation as Claude Code but designed for non-developers, handling tasks like document creation and file organization rather than just coding. Users can boost its capabilities by pairing it with connectors for external information and Claude in Chrome for browser-based work.

• Users control which folders and connectors Claude can access, with Claude asking before significant actions, though it can take destructive actions like deleting files if instructed, so clear guidance is essential to avoid misinterpretation.

• Anthropic warns about "prompt injection" risks where attackers could alter Claude's plans through content it encounters online, noting that while they've built defenses, agent safety for securing real-world AI actions remains an active industry challenge.

• The tool shifts the experience from back-and-forth chat to leaving messages for a coworker, you don't need to manually provide context or convert outputs into the right format, and Claude works through queued tasks without waiting for you to finish giving feedback.

• Unlike regular chat, Cowork lets Claude tackle tasks with agency, reorganizing downloads, creating spreadsheets from screenshots, or drafting reports from scattered notes while looping you in on progress and letting you queue multiple tasks in parallel.

Intelligence: Anthropic introduced Claude for Healthcare, HIPAA-ready tools for providers, payers, and consumers, alongside expanded life sciences capabilities that connect Claude to platforms like Medidata and ClinicalTrials.gov.

• New healthcare connectors include the CMS Coverage Database for Medicare policy verification, ICD-10 for medical coding and billing, and the National Provider Identifier Registry for credentialing plus a FHIR development skill to help developers connect healthcare systems faster with fewer errors.

• US consumers with Claude Pro and Max can now connect health records through HealthEx, Function, Apple Health, and Android Health Connect to get plain-language explanations of test results and appointment preparation all processed privately with explicit opt-in and no data used for model training.

• Life sciences users gain access to Medidata for clinical trial enrollment data, ToolUniverse with 600+ vetted scientific tools, bioRxiv & medRxiv for preprints, and Owkin's Pathology Explorer for tissue image analysis to accelerate drug discovery.

• Claude can now draft clinical trial protocols accounting for FDA and NIH requirements, track trial enrollment and site performance to surface timeline issues early, and prepare regulatory submissions by identifying document gaps and navigating FDA guidelines.
