🤿 DEEP DIVE

Claude Can Now Work in the Background While You Keep Using Your Mac

Giving an AI control of your computer usually comes with an obvious inconvenience while it clicks, types, and opens apps, you’re stuck watching it use the machine.

Claude is getting around that.

Anthropic says Claude Cowork and Claude Code can now perform computer tasks in the background, leaving the screen, mouse, and keyboard free for the user. In other words, Claude can work on the computer without effectively taking it over.

Claude gets its own workspace

The new capability means Cowork and Code can click, type, and launch apps while you continue using the Mac normally.

If a task does require Claude to use the entire screen, it won’t simply take control, Claude will first ask for permission.

There’s another useful detail > background tasks can continue even after you step away, as long as the computer remains on. So the user doesn’t have to sit in front of the machine while Claude finishes what it was asked to do.

But direct computer control isn’t necessarily Claude’s first option.

Claude will initially try to complete a task through connected services such as Gmail, Google Drive, and Slack. If that doesn’t work, it can move to the web browser. Directly controlling the computer is described as the last resort.

That creates a kind of progression: use a connected service when possible, try the browser if necessary, and only then start interacting directly with the computer.

There’s a significant limitation

For now, background activity is limited to macOS and is available only to Claude Pro and Max users. It also has to be manually enabled.

And Windows users don’t have a timetable to work with yet. It’s unclear if or when the background feature will arrive on Windows.

The quick take

  • Claude Cowork and Claude Code can now click, type, and open apps in the background.

  • Users can keep working with their screen, mouse, and keyboard while Claude handles its task.

  • Claude can continue working when the user steps away, provided the computer stays on.

  • It tries connected services and the browser before resorting to direct computer control.

  • Background activity is currently limited to macOS for Claude Pro and Max users.

TOOL SNAPSHOTS

Futuristic tools within AI, no-code, and productivity

  • Keep conversations across your favorite AI tools easier to manage.

Why it’s useful: Handy if you use several AI platforms and want one place to organize, search, save, and export your chats without sending them elsewhere.

  • Know when a domain you want becomes worth pursuing.

Why it’s useful: Useful for founders, investors, and domain buyers who would rather get a clear heads-up when something changes than keep checking registrars, auctions, and WHOIS data themselves.

  • Let Gemini spend its attention on the parts of video that matter.

Why it’s useful: Particularly useful for developers processing long videos, where selectively watching content can reduce token usage and cost while improving accuracy.
