OpenAI Launches a Smarter Memory System for ChatGPT That Stays Current and Follows Preferences
Intelligence: OpenAI is rolling out a significantly upgraded memory system for ChatGPT that automatically learns from your conversations, stays current over time, and no longer relies on you explicitly telling it what to remember.
The new system is built on a process called dreaming, where ChatGPT reviews your conversation history in the background and continuously updates what it knows about you, rather than waiting for you to say the magic words.
It now handles the passage of time properly. If you told ChatGPT you were heading to Singapore in July, it will eventually update that to past tense once the trip is over, rather than still treating you like you are packing your bags.
You can view a summary of everything ChatGPT has learned about you, update it directly, or tell it what topics to bring up and when, keeping you in control of what gets carried forward.
The compute needed to run this for free users dropped by about 5x, which is why OpenAI can now roll it out beyond Plus and Pro subscribers for the first time.

Anthropic Reveals That Claude Writes More Than 80% of Its Codebase and Is Getting Close to Running Research Independently
Intelligence: Anthropic published a detailed look at how AI is already accelerating its own development, with Claude now authoring over 80% of the company's code and engineers shipping eight times as much output per day as they did before 2025.
Before Claude Code launched in early 2025, AI wrote only a tiny fraction of Anthropic's codebase. By May 2026 that number crossed 80%, with engineers shifting from writing code to directing and reviewing it.
Claude can now complete software tasks that take a skilled human up to 12 hours, up from four minutes just 2 years ago, with the complexity of tasks it can handle doubling roughly every four months.
On open-ended research tasks, Claude is starting to suggest better next steps than humans do, beating human judgment 64% of the time in April 2026, up from 51% just five months earlier.
In one striking example, Claude fixed over 800 bugs in April that reduced a class of API errors by a factor of one thousand. An engineer estimated a human would have needed four years to do the same work.
