Sam Altman and OpenAI Introduce ChatGPT Apps

Intelligence: OpenAI announced chat-based apps inside ChatGPT and a preview of the Apps SDK built on the Model Context Protocol, with immediate availability to most users outside the EU and tools for developers to start building now.

• Apps appear naturally in conversations or by name and include interactive elements like maps, playlists, and presentations, helping users create, learn, and do more while giving developers access to over 800 million ChatGPT users.

• Availability starts today for all logged-in users outside the EU on Free Go Plus and Pro, with pilot partners including Booking.com, Canva, Coursera, Figma, Expedia, Spotify and Zillow.

• The Apps SDK preview builds on the open standard Model Context Protocol (MCP) and is open source, letting developers define app logic and interfaces, connect to their own backends, and test in Developer Mode with docs and example repos.

• OpenAI will begin accepting app submissions later this year, launch a directory for discovery, and share monetization details, including support for the Agentic Commerce Protocol for instant checkout.

Intelligence: OpenAI launched AgentKit, a toolkit to build, deploy, and improve agents, adding a visual Agent Builder, a centralized Connector Registry, a customizable ChatKit UI, expanded evals, and reinforcement fine-tuning options.

• AgentKit streamlines agent development with Agent Builder for visual multi-agent workflows and versioning, a Connector Registry for centralized data and tool governance across products, and ChatKit to embed chat-based agent interfaces that match a product’s brand.

• New evaluations add datasets, trace grading, automated prompt optimization, and third-party model support to measure and boost agent reliability.

• Guardrails is an open-source safety layer that can mask or flag PII, detect jailbreaks, apply safeguards, and run standalone or via Python and JavaScript libraries.

• Early results include Klarna’s support agent handling two-thirds of tickets, Clay reporting 10 times growth with a sales agent, and faster deployments such as Canva saving two weeks and HubSpot running a support agent.

• Reinforcement fine-tuning is generally available on o4 mini and in private beta for GPT 5, with new beta features for custom tool calls and custom graders to push reasoning and task execution.
