Judge Rules Pentagon's Anthropic Risk Label Was Unlawful Retaliation
Intelligence: A federal judge ruled that the Trump administration's move to brand Anthropic a national security risk broke the law, and the reasoning behind that decision might be more damning than the ruling itself.
The judge said the label amounted to unlawful retaliation for Anthropic's public pushback on the Pentagon's use of its models.
She pointed to the government trying to invoke the Defense Production Act on Anthropic around the same time, a move that would only apply to a company essential to national security.
The ruling noted the Pentagon kept pursuing a contract with Anthropic and working with its Mythos model on cybersecurity, even while calling the company a threat.
Lin wrote that Anthropic has no backdoor access to its own technology once handed over to the DOD.
The dispute traces back to Anthropic refusing to let its models be used for autonomous weapons or mass surveillance of Americans.

Brussels Puts ChatGPT Under the Same Rules as Big Tech Platforms
Intelligence: The EU added ChatGPT to its list of “very large” online platforms alongside Reddit and Roblox, a first for an AI chatbot, and the classification comes with a set of obligations OpenAI has four months to meet.
The “very large” label applies to services with more than 45 million monthly active EU users, a bar all three platforms cleared.
To bring ChatGPT under the Digital Services Act, the EU classified it as a search engine rather than a chatbot.
The new obligations cover everything from illegal content to effects on minors' mental wellbeing to risks around elections.
A German policy researcher said the move sets a precedent that will shape regulatory expectations for every large generative AI system operating in the EU.
The designation lands as the EU keeps escalating enforcement against U.S. platforms, having already hit X with a €120 million fine this year.
