A Federal Judge Finalized Anthropic's $1.5 Billion Settlement Over Pirated Training Books
Intelligence: A federal judge gave final approval to Anthropic's $1.5 billion settlement over its use of pirated books to train AI models, one of the largest copyright settlements in US history. The payout works out to $3,000 per work across roughly 500,000 works, though the underlying legal question of AI training and fair use remains unresolved industrywide.
The standout detail is that Judge Alsup ruled training AI on copyrighted text counts as fair use, but found downloading books from pirate sites like Library Genesis illegal on its own terms, which led Anthropic to settle rather than face trial.
Judge Araceli Martinez-Olguin signed off on the settlement after Alsup, who issued preliminary approval last year, retired.
Since the case settled instead of going to trial, the ruling won't become binding precedent for other AI copyright cases.
Google, Meta, Midjourney, and OpenAI still face their own separate copyright lawsuits over AI training, including a new one filed last week by publishers like Hachette, Cengage, and Elsevier.

Claude Cowork Can Learn Tasks From a Recorded Video Walkthrough
Intelligence: Anthropic added a Record a Skill feature to Claude Cowork, letting paid users record a walkthrough of a task so Claude can turn it into a skill and repeat it on its own. OpenAI Codex has offered a similar feature called Record and Replay since June 18, though it's currently limited to Mac users outside the EEA, Switzerland, and the UK.
The best part is that Claude only needs one recorded walkthrough to learn a task well enough to repeat it independently afterward.
The feature is available to users on Claude Cowork's paid plans.
The announcement drew mixed reactions, with some commenters saying the feature feels like a fast track to losing their job.
