Anthropic Hosted 15 Christian Leaders to Advise on Claude's Moral, Spiritual, and Emotional Behavior Toward At-Risk Users
Intelligence: Anthropic invited roughly 15 Christian leaders from Catholic and Protestant churches, academia, and business to a private two-day summit in late March, seeking guidance on how to shape Claude's moral and spiritual behavior, covering topics from how the chatbot should respond to grieving or at-risk users to whether an AI could be considered a child of God.
Participants including Silicon Valley Catholic priest Brendan McGuire and Notre Dame professor Meghan Sullivan left convinced the company's interest was genuine, with McGuire describing Anthropic as growing something it doesn't fully understand yet, a framing that reflects a broader pattern in which both Anthropic and OpenAI have consistently reached for spiritual and theological language to describe the nature and stakes of what they're building.
The summit signals that Anthropic views Claude as something categorically different from a software product, treating questions about its behavior toward vulnerable users as moral and pastoral problems that require religious expertise rather than purely technical or policy-driven answers.
