Anthropic Restores Fable 5 and Mythos 5 After a Two-Week Export Control Pause
Intelligence: Anthropic suspended Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 on June 12 after US export controls followed a report on a safeguard bypass in Fable 5. The company trained an improved classifier that blocks the issue in over 99% of cases. Fable 5 returns globally on July 1 and Mythos 5 is back for approved Glasswing partners.

On June 12 the US government applied export controls that forced Anthropic to suspend Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all users worldwide.
The suspension followed an Amazon research report showing a way to prompt Fable 5 into identifying software vulnerabilities and in one case producing exploit code.
Anthropic tested other models including Opus 4.8, GPT 5.5, and Kimi K2.7 and found they could produce similar results.
The company built a new safety classifier that blocks the reported bypass technique in over 99% of cases and routes flagged requests to Opus 4.8 instead.
Fable 5 returns globally starting July 1 while Mythos 5 is restored for approved US organizations under the Glasswing program.

The videos use a paper cutout art style rather than photorealistic rendering to avoid the uncanny valley look common in AI video tools.
