Meanwhile, Adobe's firing up the customer experience game with its new AI agents, promising smarter, more personalized interactions. Let's see if this really changes how businesses connect with customers or just adds more bot noise to the mix.

Eckart Walther’s RSL Collective Seeks AI Companies’ Adoption of a Web Content Licensing Standard

Intelligence: Major publishers backed a new open standard called Really Simple Licensing to set terms and payments for AI companies that scrape and train on their content, betting collective action will push AI builders to comply.

  • RSL extends robots.txt to include licensing and royalty terms and can be embedded in websites, datasets, books, and videos to signal how AI systems may use the content and what compensation is expected.

  • The RSL Collective, led by RSS co-creator Eckart Walther and former Ask.com chief Doug Leeds, aims to create a scalable web business model and is free to join, with supporters including Reddit, Yahoo, Medium, Quora, People Inc., O’Reilly, wikiHow, and Ziff Davis.

  • Publishers can set free or paid models such as subscriptions, pay-per-crawl, and pay-per-inference while allowing non-AI crawlers for uses like archiving or search to proceed.

  • RSL seeks to replace one-off deals like those some media firms struck with OpenAI and Amazon by giving any site owner a standard way to get paid and negotiate at scale.

  • Adoption and enforcement hinge on AI companies’ buy-in since some have ignored robots.txt, and inference fees require their reporting, and while the Collective plans ASCAP-style enforcement, the legal status of scraping and AI training remains contested.

  • RSL cannot block bots by itself, so the Collective is working with Fastly to admit only licensed AI crawlers, while Cloudflare already offers a pay-per-crawl option, and non-Fastly publishers can post terms but may not yet block unlicensed AI bots.
