AI Platforms’ Web Traffic Surges, But Still Trails Far Behind Google in Driving Referrals

Intelligence: AI platforms are rapidly increasing the amount of web traffic they send to popular websites, but Google Search still dominates as the primary source of online referrals.

Source: similarweb

  • In June 2025, AI platforms referred over 1.13 billion visits to the world’s top 1,000 websites, a 357% increase since June 2024.

  • Over the same period, Google Search generated 191 billion referrals to these sites, vastly outpacing AI tools.

  • News and media publishers have seen AI-driven visits skyrocket (up 770% year-over-year), but overall are experiencing traffic declines and fear a future “Google Zero” scenario where Google no longer sends them visitors.

  • AI summaries on search (like Google’s AI Overviews) reduce the likelihood that users click through to publisher websites: 8% click-through rate with an AI summary vs. 15% without.

  • Yahoo, Yahoo Japan, Reuters, The Guardian, India Times, and Business Insider topped June’s list of news sites benefiting from AI referrals.

  • ChatGPT was responsible for over 80% of all AI-originated web referrals to top domains.
