Claude and Anthropic’s Findings on AI’s Impact on Labor Productivity

Intelligence: Anthropic’s new report uses real conversations with its AI model Claude to estimate how artificial intelligence could influence labor productivity across the US economy, suggesting current models may roughly double productivity growth rates if widely adopted.

  • Anthropic analyzed 100,000 anonymized Claude.ai conversations to estimate how long tasks would take with and without AI. On average, tasks that once took 90 minutes were completed 80% faster with AI.

  • Using these findings, Anthropic projects that current AI models could increase US labor productivity growth by about 1.8% annually over the next decade, roughly double the recent trend.

  • Productivity gains vary widely by occupation: legal and management tasks see the biggest time savings, while manual or physical work sees less impact. Healthcare tasks can be completed about 90% faster, while hardware-related tasks show roughly 56% savings.

  • The analysis suggests AI could have its strongest effects in professional and knowledge-based industries, with software developers, managers, and analysts contributing most to overall productivity growth.

  • Anthropic validated Claude’s task-time estimates using software development benchmarks and found that while Claude’s estimates are somewhat compressed, they are directionally consistent with human benchmarks.

  • The report notes limitations: estimates overlook time spent verifying AI output, variation in adoption across industries, and possible organizational restructuring needed to realize full productivity gains. Anthropic plans to track these effects through its ongoing Economic Index initiative.
