Imperial College's AI Scans a Routine ECG and Flags Hidden Heart Disease in Under Two Seconds
Intelligence: Researchers at Imperial College London built an AI system that can scan a routine ECG in under two seconds and spot signs of heart failure and valve disease that clinicians often miss when looking at the tracing alone. Early results from a US study of around 67,000 patients suggest the tool could help hospitals identify which patients need a closer look at their heart.
The models behind the system were trained on more than 1.6 million ECGs from Brazil along with several million more from the United States.
In the US study, the AI identified 81% of patients with heart failure and 90% of those with valve disease.
Diagnostic accuracy across the broader research program ranged from 83 to 93% for heart disease in testing datasets.
Professor Fu Siong Ng noted that some patients currently wait months for an echocardiogram after being referred, the kind of delay the tool is meant to help triage.
Dr. Ahmed El-Medany, who led the analysis, described the system's pattern recognition as superhuman, since it can pick up on signals clinicians cannot consistently catch from an ECG alone.

Intelligence: OpenAI's advertising platform went from launch to a billion-dollar annualized run rate in less than 200 days, and the company is now opening it up to advertisers across some of its biggest untapped markets. The expansion says a lot about where OpenAI sees its next phase of growth heading.
Self-service access to ChatGPT Ads is opening today across India, Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa.
The platform is already live in more than 40 countries through OpenAI's ads team and its agency and technology partners.
May's launch of Ads Manager brought small and medium-sized businesses into the platform, and they now make up a meaningful share of total activity.
CPC and outcome-based bidding now account for the majority of campaigns running on the platform.
One ecommerce advertiser reported a 3x return on ad spend over a 28-day stretch, while a technology partner said more than 80 percent of its ad-driven ChatGPT traffic came from new customers.
